How to Choose a Reliable Fruit & Vegetable Exporter in India
A checklist for international buyers — certifications, sampling, quality control, documentation, and communication — to vet an Indian fresh-produce exporter before you commit.
Sourcing fresh produce internationally carries real risk — quality variance, late shipments, and paperwork problems can be costly. Here’s how to separate a dependable exporter from the rest.
1. Verify registrations and licences
A genuine exporter holds an IEC (Import Export Code) and relevant registrations such as APEDA and FSSAI. Ask for copies and confirm they’re current.
2. Insist on samples first
Reputable suppliers provide product samples and specifications before a bulk order, so you can assess grading, freshness, and consistency.
3. Check the quality-control process
Ask how produce is graded, inspected, and cured/cooled. Look for pre-shipment inspection with photos and the option of lab/residue analysis.
4. Confirm packing and cold chain
Export-grade packing (mesh bags, cartons, private label) and proper reefer/ventilated handling protect produce on long voyages.
5. Review documentation capability
Phytosanitary certificate, certificate of origin, commercial invoice, and packing list should be standard. Weak documentation causes customs delays.
6. Test communication
Before you commit, judge response speed and clarity. A supplier who answers questions quickly before the sale will serve you better after it.
